Datum Targets and Irregular Surfaces
This unit 8 explores the application of datum targets for parts with irregular or non-rigid geometry. Students will learn how to establish datum reference frames using angled and contoured datum features and apply datum targets appropriately for sheet metal, plastic components, and castings.
Special emphasis is placed on free-state versus restrained conditions and the functional impact on inspection and assembly. The unit also addresses calculations required when transitioning from casting datums to machined features. By completion, students will be able to properly define and inspect complex datum structures in real-world applications.
